Turkish Alphabet

The Turkish alphabet has 29 letters 8 of which are vowels and the rest are consonants. The Turkish alphabet has all the consonants that English alphabet has except w x and q. In addition we have 3 different consonants and 3 extra vowels in Turkish. the vowels might sound challenging for the first time but don't forget practice makes perfect. Here is the alphabet:

Pronunciation of vowels


a: as in fun, bus, father.
e: as in less, yes, name.
i: as in sick, sit, pillow.
i: is similar to the sound of "o" in falcon, lesson
ö: as in bird, dirt but a little shorter
o: as in comb, cold.
ü: does not exist in English. Please listen to the pronunciation of the vowels.
u: as in push, pull, cookie. Listen to the pronunciation of Turkish vowels!

Pronunciation of consonants


b: as in boy, but, bus.
c: as in jar, ginger, gentle.
ç: produce the same sound as "ch" in English as in chocolate.
d: as in dog, door.
f: as in fair, final.
g: as in goal, game.
g: This is called yumusak g (soft g) and doesn't have a distinct pronounciation. Its main purpose is to lenghten the vowel before it.
h: as in house, horse.
j: as in garage.
k: as in kid, cold, culture.
l: as in lemon, left, cool.
m: as in mother, music.
n: as in now, night.
p: as in people, jump.
r: car, record, door.
s: as in school, salt, pass.
s: produces the same sound as "sh" in English like in shop, push.
t: as in top, turn, cut.
v: as in very, vedeo.
y: as in young, joy.
z: as in zebra, buzz.
